Being multi-racial, how is ones race considered by the census?

as the races mix more and more, what constitutes being considered black, white or "other" my background is american indian, african american, hispanic and white, I get mistakenly taken for hispanic all of time and wonder where is this coming from. my siblings look much more african american as our parents. so what decides the race with a multi cultural background
