Virtual villagers?

well i started playing this game called "virtual villagers" on addictinggames.com (you could also google the name or in this case, "yahoo" it.). my villlagers can't do anything right with picking food. the food supply keeps on going rapidly down, faster then they can pick. what am i doing wrong?
